Understanding a Dysregulated Nervous System: Signs, Causes, and Solutions

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Constantly feeling overwhelmed

  • Easily irritated or on edge

  • Anxious without a clear reason

  • Feeling “wired but tired”

  • Overly sensitive to noises or smells

  • Experiencing muscle tension or pain

  • Dealing with indigestion or other gut troubles

If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone. These symptoms might point to a common underlying issue: a dysregulated nervous system.

What Is a Dysregulated Nervous System?

A dysregulated nervous system happens when the body stays stuck in a heightened state of alertness for too long. This is often due to the sympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for the “fight or flight” response—overpowering the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps us “rest and digest.” When this balance is disrupted, it can leave us feeling constantly on edge and unable to relax.

What Causes Nervous System Dysregulation?

There isn’t a single root cause, and it can vary from person to person. However, common contributors include:

  • Ongoing Stress: Chronic stress from work, relationships, or life changes can keep the nervous system in a heightened state.

  • Past Trauma: Unresolved trauma can leave the body in a constant state of vigilance.

  • Overexertion: Pushing your body too hard physically, mentally, or emotionally without adequate recovery.

Why Recognizing This Pattern Matters

A dysregulated nervous system isn’t a medical diagnosis, and there aren’t specific medications to treat it. Instead, it’s a helpful framework to understand why you might be experiencing certain symptoms. Recognizing this pattern allows you to take proactive steps to support your nervous system—and ultimately, your overall well-being.

How to Begin Supporting Your Nervous System

The good news is that there are practical ways to help bring your nervous system back into balance. Over the coming weeks, I’ll share strategies that I use with my clients, including:

  • Nutrition: The foods and nutrients that promote calm and resilience.

  • Intentional Rest: Practices to help your body shift into a state of restoration.

  • Everyday Habits: Simple changes you can make to regulate your nervous system.
