The Metabolic Triangle: Why Normal Labs Aren't Always Optimal

The "Normal" Lab Trap
There is nothing more discouraging than feeling completely exhausted and anxious, only to have a doctor tell you your bloodwork is perfectly normal. You leave the office feeling more confused than when you entered. If the labs are fine, is the problem all in your head?
In my practice, we move beyond the search for disease and start looking for optimal function. Standard lab ranges are often very broad. You can be at the very bottom of a normal range and still feel terrible because your brain isn't getting what it needs to thrive.
The Educational Core: The Three Pillars
Mental wellness is supported by what I call the Metabolic Triangle: Sleep, Stress Management, and Nutrition. When one side is weak, the entire structure of your mental health can start to lean.

We look at markers like Fasting Insulin to check for blood sugar instability and Ferritin to ensure your iron stores are high enough for brain energy. Normal for a lab doesn't always mean optimal for a woman's vibrant mental health.
Small Steps to Consider
Before your next appointment, try tracking your symptom patterns. Do you notice a spike in anxiety a few hours after a high-carb meal? That data is just as important as a blood draw. When you do get labs, feel free to ask your provider where you fall on the range to see if you are at the healthy midpoint or the struggling low end.
You don’t have to stay stuck in the normal but exhausted cycle. If you’re tired of guessing and would like a structured evaluation of how these metabolic pillars are affecting you, I invite you to book a discovery call. It isn't a commitment, but rather a conversation to explore whether a deeper, functional investigation is the right next step for your unique biology.
