A recent study published in JAMA Network Open (a journal of the American Medical Association) confirmed something many women already know all too well:
Far too many are feeling dismissed, gaslit, and unheard in medical settings.
What the Study Revealed
In a survey of 447 patients with vulvovaginal disorders, researchers found:
Over half considered giving up care after feeling unheard
Nearly 40% were made to feel “crazy”
1 in 5 said their symptoms weren’t believed
1 in 6 felt unsafe during a medical visit
Most had seen 5 or more providers before receiving effective care
The root causes?
➡️ Dismissive behavior
➡️ Lack of clinician knowledge
➡️ Minimizing recommendations like “just relax” or “have a glass of wine”
This Isn’t Just Data, It’s Real People
At our practice, we hear it all the time: “I was dismissed.”“They told me it was all in my head.”“I felt like no one was listening.”
It’s not just frustrating. It’s traumatic. And it’s unacceptable, especially in women’s health.
